On 19 April 2002 a workshop on "Basic education for rural people: the contribution of the Italian non-governmental organizations" was held at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy. The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen partnerships in order to increase access to quality education for the rural poor, and to discuss the results of researches undertaken on the same topic. Sixteen Italian NGOs participated.
