This review looks at the pathogenesis of FMD using information from field and experimental studies. It describes routes of infection, incubation periods, sites of primary infection and secondary sites of replication. Viral excretion of foot-and-mouth disease and the antibody response to it are also described. The review also looks at the mechanisms behind perisistent infection and the "carrier state". Finally the paper gives an overview of foot-and-mouth disease diagnosis.

This paper discusses the mechanisms behind persistent foot-and-mouth virus infection in the pharynx and the consequential carrier state. It also looks at identifying carrier animals using different diagnostic tests such as probang sampling, real time PCR, using antibodies to non-structural proteins and antibody isotope levels. Foot-and-mouth disease transmission by carrier animals is also discussed.
