FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Hazard Zone Mapping and Event Documentation

Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 29/10/2014 - 31/10/2014

Benefits of standards in event documentation and analysis focusing on floods, debri-flows and landslides
FAO Workshop

This regional workshop, co-organized by FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU) and the Sub-regional Office for Central Asia (SEC), will focus on highlighting the interrelationship between event documentation and hazard zone mapping. Best practice models and national state of the art methods will be shown and discussed in order to learn from each other. Floods can result in huge economic losses due to damage to infrastructure, property and agricultural land. Climate change is generally expected to increase the magnitude and frequency of extreme precipitation events, which may lead to more intense and frequent river flooding. Flood maps can provide useful information to planners and the public to identify areas at risk of flooding and make decisions about land use and development.
The workshop will bring together experts from European and Central Asian countries. Altogether, a total of about 30 participants from 17 different countries are expected to attend the event, including representatives from international partners, donors and FAO staff. France and Austria will also take part to discuss their experience in event database and hazard zone mapping.

Representatives of the following countries are invited to participate in the workshop:
Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, TFYR of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
