State and Private Sector: Partnerships for an Efficient Agricultural Sector Thursday, 16 January 2014
For developing countries a sustainable agricultural production, ensuring food supply for a growing population in sufficient quality and quantity constitutes a great challenge, both in financial as well as in technical terms. Investments in the modernization and increased productivity of the agricultural sector are strongly needed; however, they cannot be achieved by the public sector alone. As a consequence, the integration of private sector and civil society actors into projects of bilateral and international cooperation has constantly gained importance in recent years. GFFA Working Meeting Food systems for better nutrition Friday, 17 January 2014 Good nutrition is key for both the individual as well as social development. Malnutrition in all its forms – undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and overweight and obesity – imposes unacceptably high economic and social costs. To accelerate progress towards reducing malnutrition and to increase the resilience of vulnerable groups, concerted efforts are needed to make agriculture and food systems more nutrition-enhancing. The issues on how to maximize the contribution of agriculture and food systems to improving nutrition, particularly of women and children, are receiving increasing attention as a growing number of countries and development institutions are responding to the UN Secretary General’s Zero Hunger Challenge and are joining the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement.
