Risk assessment of GMOs in food, seeds and environment

In the frame of TCP/RER/3207D "Capacity-building in agricultural biotechnologies and biosafety" for Armenia, Georgia and Republic of Moldova, a Regional training on Risk assessment of GMOs in food, seeds and environment release was held in 3-6 October 2010, in Yerevan, Armenia.

Fiftheen representatives from national biosafety committees, where such were place, and from research, academia and government with background in biotechnology, molecular biology, genetics, entomology, pest management, ecology were trained in internationally agreed methodology and principles for the various aspects of Risk Assessment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture and practical experience in dealing with a notifier's dossier through two case studies with relevance in the region was developed through two region specific case studies.

The trainees also enhanced their knowledge of the overall principles in Risk analysis: risk assessment, risk management and risk communication with respect to agricultural biotechnologies as well as of the ongoing discussions on risk assessment- stacked events, GM trees, GM animals.

In this manner, the workshop achieved its primarily goal to train trainers, able to understand and apply internationally accepted biosafety approaches taking in consideration local specificities. Further, the newly acquired knowledge and skills would be used in the forthcoming training activities on national level both in the frame of this technical cooperation programme and in real time situations upon receival of notifications for GMO market or environmental release.
