Enforcement of biosafety regulations: principles, specific examples and institutional communication and cooperation

Regional training workshop
The workshop is jointly organised by FAO and the Czech government.
Senior officials from the Ministries of Agriculture and Ministries of Environment, as well as leading scientists from 16 countries in Europe and Central Asia are taking part.
Participants will overview the development and implementation of the national regulatory frameworks that intend to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of the use of genetically modified crops in agriculture and identify critical gaps and good practices of enforcement of those frameworks in their countries and subregions. Mechanisms for efficient interinstitutional communication and cooperation will be explored. Capacity development gaps will be identified and solutions proposed.
A dedicated team of six Czech experts, two FAO consultants and an EU project coordinator will introduce the main topics on the first day. The meeting will be opened by representatives of ministries of agriculture and environment, and the FAO Agricultural Innovation Systems and Knowledge-Sharing Officer - Regional office for Europe and Central Asia.
