African swine fever: Risk Awareness Raising and Risk Mitigation in Ukraine - two workshops

Boryspil district of Kyiv region and Poltava, Ukraine, 14/07/2015 - 16/07/2015

Two desk top African Swine fever (ASF) outbreak simulation exercises will be held in Ukraine. The exercises are organized within the on-going FAO and EBRD project “African swine fever: Risk Awareness Raising and Risk Mitigation in Ukraine” campaign. Both events are organized in cooperation with Association of Pork Producers of Ukraine.

The aim of the exercise is to develop the disease outbreak management capacity of Ukraine at a national, regional, district and farm level regarding African swine fever with specific focus on testing and developing operational procedures regarding: suspicion and sampling; epidemiological  investigation; valuation (compensation for culled animals); culling; disposal; initial disinfection. As well as testing the flow of communication and cooperation between the levels of the Veterinary Service (State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine, Regional Veterinary Service, District Veterinary Service) and Local Veterinarians as well as the National and regional veterinary laboratories, other Authorities and other stakeholders as Pig Industry.

Objectives

The participants should be given the opportunity to

  • Establish and manage the task and  communication between the different Veterinary levels during an outbreak of African Swine Fever.
  • Plan the relevant activities in details ( suspicion/sampling, valuation, culling, disposal, initial disinfection).

The first simulation exercise will take place in Boryspil district of Kyiv region on 14th July and the second one will be held in Poltava on 16th July.
