Expert panel discussion: “Promotion of urban food security and nutrition through redistribution of food at risk of loss or waste”

10-12 hrs Friday, 15 January 2016

Annually, about one third of the food produced for human consumption world-wide is lost or wasted with an estimated 22% and 12% of waste occurring at the consumer and distribution level. Micronutrient losses due to food loss and waste are significant, based on a recent FAO study.
Where food loss and waste cannot be prevented, recovery and redistribution of safe and nutritious food for human consumption can contribute to food and nutrition security, as recommended by the Committee on World Food Security and G20. This warrants empirical data and calls on coordinated actions by the public and private sector as well as civil society for informed policies, regulations and standards that enable food availability and access in urban areas.

High level working session: “Addressing Urban Food Security and Nutrition Issues: Harmonizing global developments with the need for sustainable food systems“

14-16 hrs Friday, 15 January 2016

The ultimate goal is to raise awareness on urban food security and nutrition issues at various levels, and to discuss ways to improve current food systems by identifying opportunities and approaches that target sustainability, resilience, inclusiveness and urgent needs of the most vulnerable. Specific objectives are: i) to establish a preliminary dialogue with different actors at international, national and local levels to better understand the different perspectives and roles of each actor in working towards eliminating hunger and malnutrition by promoting sustainable food systems; ii) to discuss ways for supporting the integration of food into the urban agenda utilizing multi-stakeholders and multi-sectorial approach. The dialogue and discussion will be an initial solid step to define recommendations on how to address urban food security and nutrition and how to improve current food systems by better integrating sectors and by connecting policies vertically for the implementation of SDGs and the New Urban Agenda.
