FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Forum to discuss the Food Security and Nutrition Program for the Kyrgyz Republic

Bishkek, Kyrgyzsan, 06/12/2016 - 06/12/2016

The event was organized with the support of the FAO, UCA Institute of Public Policy, and Administration.
The event was held upon completion of the online consultation, which had been conducted during the month of November 2016 with the support of FAO’s Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition. Both events aimed at strengthening national policy on food security and nutrition through public discussion of existing barriers, challenges and potential for development of the Food Security and Nutrition Program in Kyrgyzstan by involving various stakeholders.

Representatives of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, as well as research and educational institutions, private sector and international projects attended the event. During the event, participants shared their views on the current state of the program implementation, achievements and lessons learned. Participants were engaged in an open discussion on issues related to necessary and effective funding for the successful implementation of the Program, roles of stakeholders, strengthening capacity at all levels, as well as improving inter-agency and cross-sectorial coordination.

Results of the events will be analyzed and recommendations will be presented to the governmental bodies, which are responsible for food security and nutrition issues in Kyrgyzstan, for efficient implementation of the FSN Programme and improvement of further implementation phase beyond 2017.

The 2015-2017 FSNP of the Kyrgyz Republic was adopted in September 2015 through multistakeholder consultations. The Program is inextricably connected with the country’s sustainable development policy. Effective delivery of the Program is an important issue for Kyrgyzstan under global economic turmoil, volatility of global food and commodity prices and weather shocks that negatively affect country’s economy and the food security situation in general.
