Training: Diagnosis of animal viral diseases, including sampling strategies, sample reception and registration, test selection and interpretation, and quality assurance aspects

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), 08/06/2026 - 12/06/2026

This training focuses on the diagnosis of viral animal diseases and is designed to strengthen laboratory capacities within the national veterinary services of the Kyrgyz Republic. Led by international expert Kiril Krstevski, the training will provide both theoretical and practical knowledge on key aspects of laboratory diagnostics, including sampling strategies, sample handling and registration, test selection and interpretation, and quality assurance procedures.

The training aims to enhance the capacity of veterinary laboratories to prevent, detect, and respond to livestock diseases, particularly those with significant economic impact, public health implications, or transboundary nature, such as rabies and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Strengthening diagnostic capabilities is a critical priority for FAO, as well-equipped laboratories and skilled personnel play a central role in early detection, outbreak control, and effective disease management.

Participants will benefit from tailored training materials and hands-on exercises adapted to the national context, covering disease epidemiology, diagnostic algorithms, biosafety and biosecurity practices, and good laboratory procedures. The training will also support the review of existing diagnostic capacities and contribute to improving national systems for surveillance, data quality, and decision-making, in line with FAO’s efforts to build resilient veterinary services and protect animal health, livelihoods, and food security.
