The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is a regional fisheries management organization established in 1949 by FAO. It plays a critical role in fisheries governance, and has the authority to make binding recommendations for fisheries conservation and management and for aquaculture development. The main objective of the annual meetings – including plenary, benchmark and ad-hoc sessions – of the Working Groups on Stock Assessment (WGSAs) is to provide advice on the status of main commercial stocks in the Mediterranean Sea.
