FAO analyses impact of Russian food trade ban
The impact of Russia’s ban on food imports from Western countries is the subject of an analytical note published by FAO this week.
On 7 August 2014, the Russian Federation announced restrictions on imports of agricultural and food products from countries which, in an earlier move, had imposed sanctions on Russian business interests in connection with the crisis in eastern Ukraine. The import ban came in the wake of other import restrictions imposed by Russia on agricultural and food products earlier this year.
The note by FAO food trade economists examines the implications of the ban for the domestic market, particularly the possible effects on consumers, producers and imports. It also discusses factors that will influence the dynamics of supply and demand response to the ban.
