EU, FAO provide wheat seed to flood-hit Serbian farms
One hundred farming families here today received winter wheat seed for autumn sowing, under the European Union’s total flood recovery package to Serbia valued at Euro 30 million. Provision of the winter wheat to flood-affected farms is carried out by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
EU support for the winter wheat crop targets about 4,400 small-scale, family-operated farms in 24 flood-affected municipalities. Over the next three weeks, farms in all 24 municipalities will receive wheat seed and fertilizer, enabling them to complete seasonal wheat planting.
A package consisting of 250 kilos of winter wheat seed and 300 kilos of mineral fertilizer will be provided to each beneficiary farm. Both the wheat seed and mineral are procured within Serbia, following issuance of public tenders.
FAO’s activities are closely coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection and the Flood-Affected Areas Assistance and Rehabilitation Office.
