20 years of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems

Join us in celebrating the agricultural heritage around the world

Hybrid Event, 27/10/2022 - 28/10/2022

2022 marks the 20th anniversary of the FAO GIAHS Programme. FAO launched the GIAHS initiative at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002. Since its inception, the number of agricultural systems recognized as GIAHS has been gradually increasing.

In June 2015, the 39th FAO Conference granted GIAHS the status of FAO corporate programme, marking its incorporation in the organization's official activities and programmes.

Following this decision, the GIAHS Programme developed a new governance structure, and a transparent working mechanism. An independent Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) was nominated guaranteeing geographical, gender and expertise balance. The programme strengthened new collaborations, internally with other FAO technical units, and externally with other international organizations.

This strategic change in the working arrangements of the Programme accelerated the recognition of GIAHS sites. As a result, by the end of 2021 the programme counted 62 sites recognized in 22 countries. By the end of April 2022, there are 21 official candidates and many more are under identification.

During the past two decades, GIAHS has proven to be a valid model of sustainable agriculture through its holistic and future-oriented approach covering agro-ecological farming, rural development actions, and the conservation of agrobiodiversity, landscapes, cultures, and traditional knowledge.

Through GIAHS designations, local communities have implemented innovative activities and gained experiences related to sustainable use of natural resources, adaptive management, and sustainable economic development of their agricultural systems.

The 20th anniversary of GIAHS will be celebrated in form of a hybrid event in Rome, taking place on 27 and 28 October 2022.
