Focus Area II
Sustainable food supply chains to achieve healthy diets in the context of economic, social and environmental sustainability, and climate change

This focus area highlights the importance of promoting nutrition across the food supply chain and suggests ways to create sustainable and resilient food supply chains and sustainable consumption and production in the midst of climate change and natural resource degradation. It provides guidance on: mainstreaming climate adaptation and mitigation; promoting sustainable use and management of natural resources; improving food storage, processing, packaging, transformation and reformulation; improving nutrition and health of farm and food system workers; and empowering youth across food systems.

3.2.6 Empowering youth across food systems

The four digit numbering of each recommendation follows the numbering in the VGFSyN, whereby the first digit represents the chapter 3 of the document that includes the 105 recommendations, the second digit the focus area, the third digit the sub-focus area and the letter the specific recommendation.

  • Recommendation 3.2.6.a

    Governments, intergovernmental organizations, private sector and other relevant stakeholders should engage, encourage and empower youth, acknowledging their diversity, to be actively involved in food systems by enhancing their access to land, natural resources, inputs, tools, information, extension and advisory services, financial services, education, training, markets, and promote their inclusion in decision-making processes in accordance with national legislation and regulations.

  • Recommendation 3.2.6.b

    Governments, intergovernmental organizations, private sector, non-governmental organizations, and communities should invest in appropriate vocational and skill trainings, formal education, and mentorship programmes for youth to increase their capacity and access to decent work, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, as well as in demand side enabling policies and instruments to create decent work opportunities, to stimulate and be drivers toward sustainable food systems for the next generation. Investments could also include research and actions to support youth in addressing their own nutritional needs and strengthen the role of youth play as change agents influencing the consumption of healthy diets within societies both as contributors in food systems and as influencers in the households and communities.

  • Recommendation 3.2.6.c

    Governments, intergovernmental organizations and private sector should promote development, rural-urban linkages, and access to information, social innovations, resource hubs, and new technologies and practices for youth along food supply chains that enhance the sustainability of food systems, improve nutrition and support social enterprises and of youth entrepreneurship (particularly in countries experiencing high rates of youth internal and external migration). Governments, intergovernmental organizations and private sector should, in accordance to national legislations, enable youth active engagement and participation in policy-making across sectors and support the individual and collective capacities to shape food systems by recognizing their agency.
