Gender norms and women’s economic empowerment in South Sudan’s fragile contexts

South Sudan, a nation emerging from decades of conflict, faces significant challenges in rebuilding its economy and society. Women have been disproportionately affected, facing displacement, poverty, and limited opportunities. Despite their crucial role in the agricultural sector, women’s participation and leadership are hindered by deep-rooted gender norms. As the World Bank (2023) highlights, while women constitute over 60% of the agricultural workforce, they own less than 15% of productive land [1]. This disparity is rooted in discriminatory inheritance laws and social norms that limit women’s control over resources. Compounding these challenges, cultural restrictions and limited education further marginalize women. Approximately 80% of women in South Sudan experience economic exclusion due to gender and social-cultural norms (UN Women, 2022). As the humanitarian context shifts toward development-focused assistance, it is vital to address these gender inequalities, especially in rural and underserved communities, to foster inclusive economic growth.
