Rangeland and wetland management in the Hindu Kush Himalaya: Compendium of best practices

Rangelands and wetlands in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) are critical socio-ecological systems supporting biodiversity, ecosystem services, and pastoral livelihoods. This compendium documents 20 best-practice cases from across the HKH, organised around technological innovation, ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions, water management, sustainable resource use, multiple rangeland benefits, and local governance and Indigenous knowledge systems. The cases demonstrate how integrated approaches—combining traditional practices with modern technologies and participatory governance—can enhance ecosystem resilience, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen adaptive capacities under climate change. The compendium provides evidence-based, scalable, and replicable models to inform policy, practice, and investment in sustainable rangeland and wetland management in mountain regions.
