Improved Housing as a Catalyst for Enhanced Goat Productivity: A Case Study from Alluri Sitharama Raju District, Andhra Pradesh
This study shows how improved goat housing, supported by the Animal Husbandry Department and facilitated by WASSAN, has enhanced goat productivity and strengthened tribal livelihoods.
By upgrading traditional shelters into elevated goat sheds and providing training on animal health, feeding practices, and regular vaccination, farmers saw a clear reduction in disease and mortality, improved hygiene, and increased incomes.
The story of Sataka Kanthamma, a 65-year-old widow farmer, illustrates how simple, low-cost innovations transformed goat rearing into a reliable and sustainable livelihood. This affordable and locally adaptable model is highly replicable for small and marginal farmers in tribal regions.
