In aggregate terms there is no lack of water in the Mediterranean Region. But geographical distribution of rainfall is very uneven and there is a marked shortage of water in the South and East. Using the Falkenmark water stress index (less than 1000 m³/inhabitant/year) as a benchmark, we find that 60% of all people facing water scarcity in the world are concentrated in these areas.
