Small Family Farming in Indonesia - a country specific outlook

This Smallholder Country Factsheet developed by the ESA Small Family Farm Team takes a closer look at the livelihood of smallholders in Indonesia. Agriculture still accounts as the major employer before industry and services, with rice production as an important mainstay of the Indonesian economy. A striking high share of 93 percent of Indonesia’s total number of farmers are small family farms who dominate the sector and grow the bulk of staples. Compared to other Asian countries, smallholders in Indonesia start diversifying by complementing their annual farm income with non-agricultural sources or self-employment. Nevertheless, productivity and access to technology remains weak.
