Farming for Success

In Zambia, FAO has stepped up its efforts to promote sustainable innovative practices and principles of agricultural production and post-production processes. One of the main factors driving this initiative is integrated programming. Winston is one of over 20 000 contact farmers in (Zambia) who were selected and equipped with Conservation Agriculture knowledge and technologies, so they can scale up the practice by training other farmers in their communities. Since he begun farming, Winston has expanded his farm to 12 hectares from an initial single hectare in just 10 years. ‘Farming for Success’ tells the stories of farmers like Winston who have benefited from FAO’s programmatic focus through Regional Initiatives that respond to the priorities of member-states.
The initiative has focused on sustainable intensification of production and associated measures needed to address post-production issues, including better handling, processing and distribution, improved food quality and safety, and facilitating access to markets; in line with actions to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. As a cross-cutting principle, RI2 also aims at creating decent jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities to young men like Charles Shawa, addressing SDG8 which calls for productive employment and decent work for all.
Charles is a recent high school graduate. After completing secondary school studies where he excelled in agriculture as a subject, he decided to add an aquaculture component to his father’s farm. The video tells the story of this innovative young man and how he was trained in the art of fish farming through a joint partnership between the FAO and the International Labor Organization (ILO) that sought to empower young people to look at agriculture as a business. The stories illustrated in “Farming for Success’ are just examples of the thousands of farmers in Africa who have the drive and energy to develop their communities through agriculture. Through the right interventions and an integrated approach to farming, their dreams are becoming a reality.
