Tanzania: New National Strategy to Boost Organic Agriculture Looms
The government of Tanzania has drafted a strategy to improve the performance of organic agriculture and increase the production of organic foods in the country. The "National Ecological Organic Agriculture Strategy" is an eight-year initiative coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, which will officially launch in June 2023. The strategy aims to create awareness about organic agriculture among farmers and other stakeholders, increase production and productivity, and improve the market for organic products. It promotes a holistic production management system that enhances agro-ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. The strategy's chairperson stated that the focus is not to oppose conventional farming, but to improve the performance of organic agriculture among farmers by promoting the use of recommended biological inputs, biopesticides and other environmentally friendly practices.
