Survival as strength: Maasai organise collectively for resilience and justice
In Kajiado West, Kenya, Maasai communities are organizing collectively to confront historical marginalization, climate change, and environmental degradation. Through women-led solidarity groups, agroecology, communal rangeland management, savings schemes, and water committees, they strengthen livelihoods while reviving ancestral knowledge and enhancing local governance. These practices not only secure food and resources but also expand women’s and youth leadership, linking survival to justice and self-determination. Resilience here is framed not as a return to the past but as building collective power and shaping just, sustainable futures.
