World Food Day: Rasoaniaviana Clarette
“From the zucchini harvest, I obtained 50 kg. I sold half to pay for my children’s schooling and used the other half to improve our diet at home.”
In the village of Mizilo, nestled in the tropical wilds of southeast Madagascar, Rasoaniaviana Clarette has undergone an incredible transformation. Just over a year ago, she spent her time tending her seven-person household, while her husband worked the rice fields. Fast forward to today, Clarette is a skilled farmer, nutrition advocate and an inspiration to others in her community.
Madagascar faces some of the highest rates of child malnutrition in the world and, in Mizilo, diets were once limited to basic meals like cassava and rice mixed with salt and water. June 2024 was the turning point, when the Vonona Hiasa Farmer Field School (FFS) was established, funded by the Flexible Voluntary Contribution. Clarette was nominated to lead the group of 24 women, with the mission to grow and eat more nutritious food.
