Don’t eat the peels

Smallholders are sometimes thought to be conservative, fearful of change, when the opposite is true. I was in Colomi, a potato-growing municipality in the Bolivian Andes, making a video with Paul and Marcella. Local farmer, don Isidro, was kindly helping us find tuber moths to star in the video.

Don Isidro was an expert at spotting this serious potato pest, instantly recognizing the entrance tunnels of the tiny larvae in the skin of the discarded potatoes. In the field, he easily saw the difference between the frost-damaged potato plants and those that were wilted because the moth’s larvae had tunneled through the centre of the stalk.
