Integrated soil fertility management
Integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) is a holistic approach aimed at nurturing soil fertility and agricultural productivity sustainably. Recognizing soil fertility as a dynamic and multifaceted system, ISFM acknowledges the interplay of diverse factors such as nutrient dynamics, organic matter content and soil structure and the symbiotic relationships between plants, soil organisms and microorganisms. The European Union-funded programme “Capacity Building Related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements in African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries Phase III” (ACP MEAs 3) implemented field activities in the United Republic of Tanzania to mainstream biodiversity into the agricultural sector. The programme underscored the need for enhancing the knowledge base of farmers and extension service providers in areas such as agroforestry systems and ISFM, which led to the development of a training manual tailored to local contexts. The Integrated soil fertility management: Training guide for facilitators aims to democratize knowledge and empower stakeholders at the grassroots level. By distilling complex concepts into accessible guidance, it equips facilitators, farmers, extension officers and development agents with the tools needed to implement ISFM approaches effectively.
