Learning for rural change

18 stories from Sudan

This book i is a kaleidoscopic view of a variety of agricultural initiatives taking place in the large country of Sudan. Many of the stories present lessons learnt in activities supported by IFAD, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the Ministries of Agriculture and of Livestock in Sudan. The reader will notice the great diversity in writing styles. Each set of experiences and views belongs to an individual author, and they chose different styles to tell their stories. This makes for fascinating reading. The articles are grouped into four themes. Some cover issues of water harvesting, efficient water use and the use of specific crops - a crucial topic n the drylands of Sudan. Other articles focus on livestock. Several initiatives provide communities with goat and sheep breeding support, which has a significant impact on people’s lives.A number of authors chose to share their experience on strengthening capacities and improving livelihoods of women. The important but often undervalued role of women in agriculture and in their communities is strengthened through these initiatives. Finally, several articles address innovative ways to share knowledge - ranging from facilitating access to information on mobile phones to supporting indigenous as well as regional knowledge exchange.
