Transitioning into an Organic Fruit Farm

After 5 years spent working in the French agricultural sector, Dobrin Kalinov gained enough experience and confidence to start his own farm in Bulgaria. In 2009, he established a 34 ha apricot orchard. Between 2009 and 2013, with the support under Measure 112, the farm expanded and acquired farm machinery. The farm has now an apricot orchard of 42 acres and a walnut plantation of 22 acres. Mr Kalinov decided then to switch to organic farming.

The objective is to support the transition from a conventional to an orgarnic farm while maintaining sustainable economic activities.

Dobrin Kalinov attended a training on agroecology. By the end of 2016 the farm will comply with the requirements of Regulation (EC) № 834/2007 on organic production and labeling of organic products, while maintaining good agricultural practices.

Since the end of 2011 the farm is under the supervision of organic certification authorities. The farm will further develop its activities in the next years to become more competitive while respecting the environment.
