Bahrain on the Food Security Index 2013

White paper

The agricultural sector has attracted rising concern and development focus due to the uncertainty triggered by the supply shocks experienced globally in the last five years and the ever-increasing price index for food items. Bahrain faces its unique challenges in this domain mainly as a result of a combination of resource-related factors that limit production, including land scarcity, water scarcity and climate conditions. The growing population and increasing urbanization have also put an upward pressure on demand that has created an opportunity not yet fully recognized by the private sector. While overall employment in this field has somewhat decreased, fishing and aquaculture have recently emerged as booming and lucrative fields. The EIU global food security index was calculated for Bahrain in an effort to recognize the complex elements that influence the food security landscape and assess areas of strength and weakness that can inform policy making as well as business decisions. The index also provides a framework with which progress in the field and its main drivers could be accurately tracked. Bahrain’s overall food security position, relative to regional and global counterparts, as well as its comparative performance in specific elements, is made evident to improve rankings moving forward.
