Expansion of Organic Horticultural Production Facility

This Spanish project invested in the rationalisation and improvement of existing horticultural production facilities and in the introduction of two new lines of products, namely field tomatoes and watermelons.

A group of producers came together to form the Bio Sol Portocarrero company which produces and markets organic horticultural products. The company is committed to the provision of healthy and high quality products delivered through a rigorous quality control system. To achieve its goals the company decided to invest in the rationalisation and improvement of existing facilities and the commissioning of two new lines of products: organic tomatoes and watermelons.

The overall objective was to expand the existing facilities to best meet the increase in current and planned activity, especially with regard to field tomatoes and watermelon. The specific objectives comprised of: expanding production capacity; rationalising the existing facilities; introducing process automation; and improving the process of unloading and shipment.

The project was built around four key activities, implemented in accordance with environmental regulations: a) incorporation of two new processing lines for field tomatoes and watermelon; b) implementation of a sophisticated system for loading and unloading field boxes containing horticulture products; c) installation of a product transfer strap and a label dispenser; and d) acquisition of a platform to allow automated handling of products during transport and storage.
