Evaluating the compensation for organic production in Sweden’s Rural Development Programme
This evaluation examines the effects of compensatory payments for organic production in Sweden on rural development, the environment and climate.
This evaluation from Sweden evaluated the compensation for organic production in the country’s Rural Development Programme and revealed a positive impact on farmers' profitability, competitiveness, local economies and innovation. It also found that organic farming supports biodiversity preservation and reduces pesticide uses in Sweden, while only a small difference in plant nutrient losses was reported when compared to conventional farming. The impact on climate was difficult to determine because of conflicting factors, such as positive impacts from reducing mineral use and negative ones from land use and fuel consumption. The evaluation is mainly based on a literature review or a questionnaire and previous evaluations for rural development issues.
