Sealing jars, opening opportunity: A women-led food processing centre in Afghanistan

In Jabal Saraj, Parwan Province, a group of women launched a food processing centre to produce pickles, jams, and tomato paste, supporting their families and earning income. This initiative is part of FAO’s Household Food and Livelihood Security (HFLS) project, funded by the Government of Luxembourg, aimed at enhancing livelihoods through improved agricultural productivity and education. In November 2024, FAO distributed 380 food processing kits to women in Kabul, Laghman, Logar, and Parwan, supported by 19 social mobilizers. With limited livelihood options, agriculture is vital for women, and FAO continues to provide innovative support. The HFLS project identifies the most viable and profitable livelihood strategies based on the field realities, market potential and geographic conditions of each target area, prioritizing the poorest 20 percent of households in each targeted district. At the core of the HFLS approach are Common Interest Groups (CIGs), which are small, purpose-driven groups formed at the village level that bring producers together to share knowledge and identify income-generating opportunities. These groups, which meet regularly and manage collective savings, offer a foundation for both technical learning and mutual support.
