A successful business based on the full use of ostriches

In 2012, the Estonian farm Jaanalinnu had four ostrich. The desire to expand the business and passion for raising these birds has caused the two young farmers to access grants to build a new barn and an incubator for chicken. The overall objective was to increase the number of ostriches on the farm. Building the barn and the incubator offered the possibility of extending the business by arranging special space for storing poultry and eggs. The farm work focuses mainly on the production of eggs, but it is taken into account also the marketing of meat. Besides ostriches, on the farm there are emu birds, rheas, peacocks and parrots. Annual production of the farm is 300-400 eggs. In addition, egg shells recovered, feathers, skin and bones turned into handmade crafts sold on through the farm shop.
