Valorization of Forest Products : Marula ,Baobab and Mangetti

In Zimbabwe, FAO has been implementing a four year EU funded project to improve food and nutrition security of vulnerable rural communities through participatory sustainable forest management and value addition to forest products. The tough protective shell that houses a delectable delight earned the Marula fruit the name, HARD NUT. The walnut-sized stone contains 2-3 seeds with a delicate nutty flavour. While little known globally, the fruit is traditionally used for food in Africa, and has considerable socioeconomic importance. Judith, an entrepreneur in the Bulilima village of Plumtree Zimbabwe is chair lady of the Vusanani cooperative of 10 members comprising youths, widows as well as the elderly women. These are enterprising women who have resolved to tap into the jewel of treasure hidden in the Marula fruits, an abundant source of wealth stored up in their forests. The project launched this group of industrious women into the depth of their potential through a of host training programs. Vusanani's success story is an inspirational tale that has seen 11 similar cooperatives sprouting from Bulilima. Apart from the processing, marketing and selling of honey, The Forest Forces project trained the beekeepers on the construction. It is easy to setup and use. [The Kenyan top bar hives] This is a simplified beehive that women can now construct. The stories illustrated in this video are just examples of the hundreds of farmers in Zimbabwe who have established thriving business enterprises by adding value to naturally available non timber forest products.
