The challenges of being a beekeeper

Food Security Center interviews an entrepreneur beekeeper in Greece regarding the challenges that beekeepers are facing nowadays.

A bee helps 75% of crops producing fruits and seeds to pollinate. It increases biodiversity and food production, while it provides us with micronutrient-rich foods. Last but not least, it maintains the ecosystems. After all these, we can all realize that a bee is much more than “just a bee”. The truth is that bees and beekeepers confront many challenges nowadays… Can someone actually earn a living as local producer and what would be the difference between your local and mass-produced honey? Last but not least, are bees misunderstood? Are people aware of the crucial role bees have as far as the stability and actually the existence of our ecosystem in concerned? How can we ensure their future and along this our future? Food Security Center interviews an entrepreneur beekeeper in Greece who -at the end of the story- believes that the future is not so promising as far as beekeeping is concerned. The reasons are many and we focus on a tiny -but very important- part of these. The bottom line? We must definitely change our attitude towards nature. We must protect our environment. We must embrace biodiversity. Bees are hungry because of monocultures. Pollution is a threat, hormones and pesticides as well. And these things consist a threat not only towards the bees but towards humanity as well. Transmission antennas and wind generators must meet specific standards. And that would be only the beginning towards a series of transformation that should take place in order to embrace a more sustainable and… beeautiful future!
