Transforming agri-food systems

Legislative interventions for improved nutrition and sustainability

Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015, has set targets for achieving zero hunger and transforming the agri-food system, amongst many other universal goals. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is actively working towards the achievement of food security and nutrition (FSN) and supporting the necessary transformation of agri-food systems in collaboration with other UN agencies and partners at international and national levels. While it has been supporting countries in the development of legal frameworks for FSN from a human rights-based approach for many years, FAO considers that from a agri-food systems perspective, more targeted work is needed. This Legal Paper contributes to furthering the knowledge on legislative entry points for improved nutrition and sustainable agri-food systems, taking due account of the broader enabling environment for nutrition and health. This study, realized under the 2017 Memorandum of Understanding between FAO and Laval University in Canada, is meant to help bridge this knowledge gap. To do so, it highlights the main functions of the law supporting sustainable agri-food systems that promote healthy diets and improve nutrition.
