Reduced tillage in organic farming

For many years, organic farming was and still is based on the use of the plow as the main tool for cultivating the soil. Plowing brings a considerable number of benefits to farmers, such as soil loosening and a phytosanitary effect - the regulation of diseases and pests as well as the occurrence of perennial weeds in the subsequent crop.

With plowing, the farmer is able to incorporate a significant amount of post-harvest residues or organic material such as manure, compost and green manure into the soil. It is an excellent tool for terminating clovergrass or alfalfa vegetation, which are an important part of a functional farming system in organic farming. Plowing is used for preparation before sowing spring crops - over the winter, the plowed soil breaks down due to frost, and in the spring it warms up and dries out faster than soil with plant cover. Warming up the soil in particular gives spring crops a better start. It is a universal work tool and many farmers cannot imagine effective management in the organic farming system without it. One of the main factors of the intensive use of the plow is the reduction of the occurrence of weeds, which most organic farmers fear, especially those just after the conversion from conventional to organic farming.
