To mark International Women’s Day 2025, organizations including CGIAR, AWARD, ILRI, and CIFOR-ICRAF emphasized the urgent need to empower women within Africa’s agri-food systems. The event highlighted the essential role women play in agriculture, a sector central to many African economies. A forthcoming report notes that 49% of agri-food system workers in Sub-Saharan Africa are women—11% above the global average—underscoring their dominance in crops, livestock, fisheries, and forestry, particularly in Central and Eastern Africa.
