Rural Female Teachers in Yemen encourage young girls to get an education
The lack of female professionals in many spheres, including education, reduces Yemenis women's opportunities to learn and thrive
In Yemen, millions of children—particularly girls—remain out of school due to conflict, poverty, and cultural barriers such as early marriage and the lack of female teachers. Eman, a rural female teacher in AlDhale’e Governorate, exemplifies the critical role women educators play in reversing this trend. Beyond teaching, Eman engages in advocacy, persuasion, and diplomacy to encourage girls to return to school and to convince families of the value of education. Her efforts highlight the challenges young Yemeni girls face, including forced early marriage, long travel distances to schools, and the predominance of male teachers, all of which limit access to education. Despite these barriers, female rural teachers like Eman inspire resilience and determination, providing not only academic instruction but also hope, empowerment, and a pathway out of the cycle of poverty for the next generation of Yemeni girls.
