Varieties that produce tubers near the soil surface increase exposure of tubers to the weevils. If weevils are a problem in your area, select varieties that are deep-rooting and that mature early, in 90 to 120 days. Cover all cracks with soil to reduce passage of weevils to the deeper areas of the mounds. After harvest, remove all infested vines and pieces of sweet potato that may remain in the field, and feed them to livestock.
