The Status of Youth in Agrifood Systems: New FAO report shines light on pitfalls and prospects for 1.3 billion young people
As key agents of change, the current generation of young people must increase food production, replace an aging workforce, and adapt to increasing extreme climate events
The FAO's report, The Status of Youth in Agrifood Systems, examines the pivotal role of youth in transforming agrifood systems to enhance food security, nutrition, and economic opportunities. With 1.3 billion individuals aged 15 to 24 globally, nearly 85% reside in low- and lower-middle-income countries where agrifood systems are vital for livelihoods. The report highlights that 44% of working youth depend on agrifood systems for employment, compared to 38% of working adults. However, food insecurity among youth has risen from 16.7% to 24.4% between 2014-16 and 2021-23, particularly affecting young people in Africa.
