Global Report on Food Crisis 2025 September Update - Full Report

The Global Report on Food Crises 2025 – September Update (GRFC 2025) highlights a severe deterioration in global food security, with around 1.4 million people facing Catastrophe (IPC/CH Phase 5) levels of acute food insecurity, primarily in Gaza and Sudan. The largest burdens are found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, and Sudan, while Gaza, South Sudan, and Yemen have the highest proportions of affected populations. Since 2024, 14 countries have seen worsening food insecurity due to conflict, climate extremes, economic shocks, and structural fragility, while some others show limited improvement that often hides local crises or data gaps. Gaza and Sudan are experiencing confirmed famines, with projections indicating further spread, and South Sudan faces famine risk in conflict-affected counties. Nutrition crises persist in 26 countries, with particularly alarming rates of acute malnutrition in Gaza, Sudan, Yemen, and South Sudan. Displacement and forced returns continue to drive vulnerability, with displaced and returnee populations disproportionately affected. Funding cuts and access restrictions are undermining humanitarian operations and monitoring capacity. The report stresses that while immediate, large-scale, and multisectoral assistance could avert widespread starvation, long-term recovery depends on addressing the underlying causes—conflict, economic instability, and climate shocks. These crises highlight the urgent need for sustained, gender-sensitive, and resilience-oriented policies that strengthen livelihoods, food systems, and humanitarian access, ensuring that the most vulnerable—especially women and children—can rebuild their lives and communities.
