Arab Forum For Rural Advisory Services (AFRAS) Country brief - Sudan

The Arab Forum for Rural Advisory Services (AFRAS) is a regional platform that strengthens inclusive, climate-smart advisory and extension systems by linking public, private, and civil-society providers across the Arab region. Sudan has about 73.5 million hectares of arable land, with roughly 26 million cultivated each year. Agriculture contributed 22.1 percent of GDP in 2024, but the conflict that began in April 2023 cut the sector’s share by 16 percent. Output rebounded in 2024 and 2025, with grain at 6.6 million tonnes and total cereals at 6.7 million tonnes, 62 percent above the previous year and 7 percent above the five year average. The crop mix spans cereals, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, fodder crops, pulses, and diverse horticulture, and the livestock herd is large at an estimated 111.8 million head. Agriculture employs 40.4 percent of the workforce and agricultural exports accounted for 42.9 percent of national exports between 2011 and 2021. With cultivated areas shrinking due to conflict, policy now emphasizes higher productivity per acre through technology packages from the Agricultural Research Corporation, conservation agriculture and water harvesting, demonstration fields and farmer schools, and stronger producer organizations that improve smallholders’ access to finance and inputs.
