Organic production and nutrimarketing strategy of ‘Hungaricums’ of animal origin

During the past decade, the general attitude of the population towards health, nutrition, quality and environment has remarkably changed. Consequently, organic farming is increasing, especially in economically developed countries. Due to the growing demand, government subsidies and other economic advantages, the cropping area has increased. In Hungary, organic farming principally means organic crop production. Livestock with organic certification has existed in Hungary only for some years, with organic animal husbandry usually located in the areas of national parks. For this reason, farmers primarily keep breeds that are suitable for rough grazing, e.g. indigenous, traditional breeds. Table 1 shows the total number of animals in animal unit and the numbers of the two chosen species from 2001.
