Empowering rural women in Haiti: a step forward

This systematization presents the outcomes of the use of the "Women in Development" approach (WID) by FAO-Haiti. This women-only approach recognizes the productive role of women, in addition to their reproductive role, and seeks to improve women's living conditions through the implementation of Income Generating Projects. Given the fragility of rural women in Haiti due to structural weaknesses that limit women's access to basic services, financial capital and means of production, the use of this approach is very important in this context. FAO’s internal resources (USD 400 000) financed this project, which involved fifteen women’s organizations corresponding to 1 200 people. The results of this project have brought out very positive transformations such as the increase of 30 to 50% of women's investment capacities in food processing units, some associations have seen the number of women among their members increase by 40%, the satisfaction of the beneficiaries (88% are very satisfied), among others.

This publication is aligned with the transformation of food systems by focusing on the production, processing and conservation of crop products by improving the quality of work through innovative techniques involving actors from different sectors of national life. The use of new processing, conservation and packaging equipment constitutes innovative actions that can improve the working conditions of women. This initiative is aligned with priority area 2 of the Country-Programming Framework and refers to the regional initiative 2: "Hand in Hand towards Prosperous and Inclusive Rural Societies" and the aspirations "Better Production" and "Better Life".
