The correlation between beans and empowerment

Gathering statistics for better-informed women’s empowerment and nutrition policies

Across countries like Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, a new survey initiative led by FAO, IFPRI, and national statistical offices is gathering sex-disaggregated data to better understand the links between women’s empowerment and nutrition. As part of the 50x2030 Initiative, enumerators conduct household interviews—first with male heads of households and then privately with women—to explore sensitive topics such as autonomy, decision-making, and food consumption. The data reveals a strong correlation between women’s empowerment levels and the diversity of their diets, though higher empowerment can also be associated with increased consumption of processed foods. These insights are critical for shaping inclusive agricultural and nutrition policies that reflect women’s real experiences and challenges, ensuring that rural women are not only counted but also heard and supported in development efforts.
