First report of Syneura cocciphila (coquillett, 1895) (Diptera : Phoridae), as a predator of the fluted scale Crypticeria multicicatrices Kondo & Unruh, 2009 (Hemiptera:Monophlebidae)

This report documents the first recorded presence of Syneura cocciphila (Diptera: Phoridae) as a natural predator of the invasive fluted scale insect Crypticerya multicicatrices (Hemiptera: Monophlebidae) in Colombia. The scale insect has become a serious pest on the islands of San Andrés and Providencia, affecting palms, fruit trees, and ornamentals. The study confirms that S. cocciphila larvae feed on the body contents and eggs of the scale insect, pupating inside or near the ovisac. With an average of 1.4 flies per scale, this predator shows potential for use in biological control programs to manage C. multicicatrices populations in affected regions.
