Darb El Karam

the trail of generosity

In Lebanon, food culture is an integral part of the local identity. Though much of the culinary repertoire is the same, different communities have their own local dishes and cooking techniques that highlight their distinctive traits. Farming activities and food preserve making are at the centre of the Lebanese rural life where communities are still tightly connected to the land.

The Food Heritage Foundation aims to promote local food heritage as a main driver of rural economic development by encouraging rural-urban linkages. The foundation introduces one of its main projects, “darb el karam”, a food tourism trail connecting 9 villages in Higher Shouf and West Bekaa. This project, funded by USAID in the framework of Lebanon Industry Value Chain Development project, is being implemented with the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit of the American University of Beirut and the Shouf Cedar Biosphere Reserve.

This is the first project of its kind in Lebanon. It aims to create a touristic destination focused on food tourism and to increase and diversify the income of small farmers, food producers, local guides, and bed and breakfast operations integrated to the food trail through the development of touristic packages cantered on agricultural, pastoral and food processing activities as well as traditional cuisine
