El Comité Coordinador para Asia se creó en el 11.º período de sesiones de la Comisión del Codex Alimentarius celebrado en Roma (Italia), en julio de 1976. Su primera reunión se celebró en Nueva Delhi (India) en enero de 1977.
El coordinador regional trabaja en el Ministerio de Agricultura, Silvicultura y Pesca del Japón.
Japón, en su calidad de coordinador regional para Asia, aspira a alcanzar los siguientes objetivos, manteniendo al mismo tiempo los valores fundamentales del Codex, es decir, la inclusión, la colaboración, la creación de consenso y la transparencia:
- Fomentar la colaboración y la coordinación dentro de la región facilitando el intercambio de opiniones, de modo que los miembros asiáticos puedan estar bien informados y participar eficazmente en la Comisión y sus órganos subsidiarios; y
- Promover debates abiertos y constructivos en el Comité Coordinador Regional para identificar las cuestiones actuales, emergentes y críticas relativas a la protección de la salud del consumidor y la garantía de prácticas justas en el comercio de alimentos dentro de la región, y abordar estas cuestiones de manera oportuna.
The "Action to support implementation of Codex AMR Texts" (ACT) project is a FAO initiative funded by the Republic of Korea, to tackle foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by applying Codex AMR texts. In Mongolia, the Action to support implementation of Codex AMR texts (ACT) project supported national celebrations of World Food Safety Day in several ways. On 20 May, the ACT team in the country conducted training on Codex and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) for students at the Food Technology Institute. A Japanese restaurant company, Zensho, took part in World Food Safety Day for the third consecutive year. The company organized various events to provide its employees with the opportunity to practice food safety with the theme "Science in action." An internal video was created to reaffirm that actions such as handwashing contribute to food safety. A bulletin board promoted World Food Safety Day participation, which included a food safety quiz. The National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN) acting as the Codex Contact Point of Indonesia, is advocating for a science-based approach to ensure food safety. "Effective food safety regulations should be based on strong scientific principles," stated Y.
