La dix-huitième session de la Commission du Codex Alimentariusqui s’est déroulée en 1989, est convenue de créer un Comité de coordination pour l’Amérique du Nord et le Pacifique Sud-Ouest, ce qui a permis de rassembler, selon les termes de la délégation néo-zélandaise, «des pays très éloignés […] qui ont beaucoup d’intérêts communs».
Le CCNASWP couvre une région extrêmement diversifiée. Il regroupe des économies avancées, comme les États-Unis d’Amérique, le Canada, l’Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande, mais aussi 10 petits États insulaires. La plus grande de ces îles est la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée (qui compte plus de 7 millions d’habitants) et les plus petits États sont les Îles Cook et Nauru, avec des populations avoisinant les 10 000 habitants.
Le coordonnateur régional opère au sein du Ministère fidjien de l’agriculture.
Les Fidji ont hâte de mettre les normes en application au niveau national et de soutenir tous les pays de la région, notamment les petites îles en plein développement, pour instaurer un cadre stratégique viable en matière de sécurité sanitaire des aliments. Ces initiatives appuieront les améliorations apportées dans le secteur de la santé publique, garantiront la sécurité sanitaire et la qualité attendue des aliments importés, et développeront l’accès aux marchés internationaux.
Le coordonnateur régional continuera de soutenir les travaux menés sur les normes régionales et il s’attachera globalement à intensifier la participation de la région au sein du Codex. Pour cela, il faudra continuer de développer les capacités nationales en renforçant le rôle des coordonnateurs et des Points de contact nationaux, et ainsi améliorer la participation aux travaux du Codex.
“After last having met as a region in 2019, the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for North America and the South West Pacific (CCNASWP16) provides an excellent opportunity to reconnect and exchange views concerning food standards and food control in the region,” said FAO’s Dirk Schulz, in Nadi, as preparations for the session neared completion.

Vinesh Kumar is the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture in Fiji and will chair the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for North America and the South West Pacific (CCNASWP) that will take place in Nadi from 31 January to 3 February 2023.

World Food Safety Day (WFSD) activities in Samoa took place from 31 May to 7 June 2022, with the participation of over 1000 people. Activities consisted of interviews with Samoa National Codex Committee members, the screening of the interviews on television and social media, a World Food Safety Day-themed Trivia session on national television, and food-safety booths located next to the Accident Compensation Corporation Building (ACC) in Apia, Samoa.

The Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) has agreed to send guidelines on the control of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and on the safe use and reuse of water in food production to the next Codex Alimentarius Commission for final adoption. Both proposed Codex texts are extensive documents and although the general sections and several commodity specific annexes are now finalized, the committee will continue to negotiate on specific areas of intervention for other foods.

The 82nd meeting of the Codex Executive Committee (CCEXEC) is being held virtually from 20 to 30 June 2022. However, representatives from the South West Pacific region met in person ahead of the meeting to prepare for and participate in the meeting from a single location.

The National Codex Committee (NCC) of Fiji organized a nation-wide World Food Safety Day awareness event this year, for which the Honourable Minister for Agriculture and the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture delivered statements. The event also included booths and a school oratory contest, as well as some presentations by the NCC itself, to explain the importance of Codex. The Reseau Alimentaire de l’Est de Montréal (RAEM) has organized a lunchtime discussion about "Food safety: our plate is the best witness!" to which experts have been invited for an “enriching discussion” about how to understand the importance of food safety to health.
